pre-trip: And you may ask yourself-well...how did I get here?

Listening: Talking Heads, "Once In A Lifetime"

It's just after midnight and in roughly 18 hours, Judy will arrive at the Portland airport. For those of you unfamiliar with my family, Judy is my mother, a woman with a heart of gold and a seemingly bottomless source of patience. She agreed, halfheartedly (but soon came around in a glorious show of support), to accompany me on this trip. She and I will get into my wee Saturn, stuffed full of my clothing, books, cds and remnants of my life in Portland, and drive for roughly eight days until we reach Mississippi.

I have a million things to do on my list before we can leave Sunday. I still have to get my tires rotated, make a mix for the first day (I had to get a brand new iPod, long story you don't want to hear) of driving, um, PACK? I have to figure out how to pack up hundreds of cds, pack and ship my books and get a nap in between. I am also hosting a grand Southern dinner at my house on Saturday night for my closest friends and my family here. Also, I still have to make it through the last day at my job tomorrow. Leaving tomorrow afternoon will be a truly bittersweet moment for me. I actually really adore the organization I work for; for all its flaws, it is truly a bright light in the world of education. However, it is because of what I've been doing there for the past year and a half that has led me to my forthcoming path.

Oh, blah blah blah. I could talk about my job for days. Just ask my sister.

Anyway, this space serves the purpose of documenting what could be the most important thing I do with my mom. Every evening when we stop for the night, I will recount our day and if it's anything like the last time I moved across the country, it will be highly amusing and maybe slightly horrifying. I kid, I kid! I hope to hold on to my bag of panties this time and not gain another potentially stolen tinted car window.

Leave us thoughts of love, luck and goodness.

make sure you got this one on the mix (have a great trip!):

"Now and then it keeps you running
It never seems to die
The trail's spent with fear
Not enough living on the outside
Never seem to get far enough
Staying in between the lines
Hold on to what you can
Waiting for the end
Not knowing when
May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away
Trying to make it far enough, to the next time zone
Few and far between past the midnight hour
Never feel alone, you're really not alone...
Switching it over to AM
Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down
Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven
May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away."
